Traffic Sign New at 10732 North Canoa Hills Trl
Bus stop sign or slow drive due to children crossing
CLOSED
Field Inspection Conducted - Close SR. 9/7/23 - Talked with Kathya Romero about cars not stopping when bus is releasing kids. I informed her that when the bus is releasing kids that the bus should have the stop sign with its lights on making it an allway stop. I informed her to contact the bus driver to assure they are leaving the stop sign with lights on till all kids are exiting. She would also like speed limit signs on the entrance in her neighborhood. Speed limit sign will be installed with the neighborhood speed limit changes work order. No further action required at this time. -

Traffic Sign New at 4801 Monterey Oaks Blvd
CLOSED
Study Requested - Close SR. Hello everyone, the Austin Transportation and Public Works Department (TPW) received requests regarding the intersection of Monterrey Oaks and Staggerbrush. I have blind copied everyone because TPW received several requests and though it would be easier to send one email. Typically, we prefer for parents to contact the school so the Campus Advisory Council (CAC) is aware of what it is going on in case TPW needs to meet with them so we can get the word out easier. TPW has been in touch with the principal and Safe Roues to School. TPW conducted counts and video. We received the traffic volume counts and have concluded that an all-way stop is not warranted at this intersection. The volumes do not meet the Texas Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD) warrants and there are concerns that installing one may create new problems beyond the ones currently occurring. The main thing is you want to have at least a 60% of vehicles on one street and 40% on the other street. This particular intersection had 95% on Monterrey Oaks and 5% on Staggerbrush. This would create problems when it wasn't pick up or drop off times. We discussed this morning and have two alternatives. * In the short term, having two crossing guards would be ideal since I understand that it may be difficult for one person to stop traffic on Monterey Oaks Boulevard. While waiting for a second crossing guard to apply, if there's any possibility of getting assistance out there on a regular basis, even if it's not five days a week, then I think that would go a long way towards helping the situation. * In the longer term, TPW was thinking of combining the two pedestrian crossings to the north and south into one midblock crossing (see below for approximate location). I think that by doing this we could better utilize that median space to create a two-stage crossing so that it's more manageable for one crossing guard to control. We could also reduce the size of the school zone to only encompass this one crossing; the current school zone is very long since it captures both crossings and we've heard reports of noncompliance with the speed limit. I think this option would also require coordination with the school to provide a pedestrian path along the ridge between the two drainage basins. -
